Refit

Speedwell of Rhu is currently in the yard at Fox’s boatyard for a refit. It’s taking a while but work is progressing, we’re currently looking at launching around the end of January 2010.

Progress so Far

The osmosis treatment is complete and the hull is now looking very smart in its new Coppercoat anti-fouling .

The decks have been sanded and re-caulking is in progress. Our surveyor recommended completely re-caulking the decks but initial investigation at the yard seemed to show that only some of the seems would need to be repaired. However now that the boat has been under cover for a few weeks and the planking has dried out more seams have been found to need repairing so we have now decided to have the full deck raked out and re-caulked.

Our new speed, depth forward looking sonar transducers have been fitted.

Work Under Way

While the boat is under cover the yard are getting on with some of the other jobs.

Still to Do

We’ve been working with the riggers at Fox’s to specify the masts for the re-rig. This is now decided and the masts are on order, they’ll be fitted when Speedwell is out of the shed. See Masts and Rigging for more details.

The new electronics and instruments need fitting (including the pile of boxes currently in our spare bedroom).

I’ve been planning the upgrade to the electrical system, but I want to wait until the boat is back in the water before making a start on this.
