Friday 10 August

Today we had a leisurely start as we knew we only had around 20 miles to go. Easterly winds were forecast which weren't ideal as we were heading east, but the sun was still shining! We tacked across Falmouth Bay and out to sea, which was quite choppy.

We were close hauled on starboard tack most of the way so made around 4-5 knots. However, as we passed Dodman Point we got a better angle on the wind and made 6-7 knots into Fowey Harbour. With all the tacking we had travelled nearly 10 miles further than planned. As we entered Fowey there were rowing boats and kayaks in the channel and a couple of dolphins, one with a fish in his mouth, came to say hello. The harbour master suggested we go up river where we found a pontoon berth free above the car ferry and opposite the docks, where ships come in to pick up china clay. Nonetheless, it was a peaceful and protected place away from all the traffic lower down the river by the town.

It was a very warm evening with the sun shining directly into the cockpit. We tried to make a bimini out of a used sheet. Somehow it wasn't quite right.

Saturday 11 th August

We had a leisurely morning and headed down river to Fowey in our tender where we had lunch and did yet more shopping. Lots of boats came into the harbour and somehow found places to berth alongside, and rafted up. In addition there was a cruise liner, kayaks, hire boats and racing keel boats managing to tack around the moored boats. We have definitely arrived on the south coast. When we arrived back at our pontoon, unsurprisingly, we had two boats rafted on us and several others around us of a variety of sizes.
