Speedwell of Rhu Ship's Log

9 th of July 2010 - Caledonian Canal - Day 6

Crew : Helen and Andy
Destinations : Banavie Top Basin.
Distance : 15 miles

Today we went through the lock early into Loch Ceann and then Loch Lochy.

As the wind was behind us we sailed the whole length at around 2.5knots. It did rain fairly heavily as we got to Gairlochy where we stopped briefly before being allowed through the lock.

There was the usual unnecessary rush to get into the lock first, meaning that someone pushed in front of us to moor starboard side as we had been instructed to do. Andy quickly changed the fenders over and we parked without any bother next to the other Oyster port side to.

We got to the top of Neptunes Staircase a flight of 9 lock gates. We decided to stay at the top at Banavie with a view of Ben Nevis.

We couldn't actually see Ben Nevis when we got there,

however, as the afternoon progressed the sun came out and the summit was revealed. We had a walk around the locks and saw the west coast steam train crossing the canal on it's way to Fort William.

We had our first meal out since Whitby in the local pub.
