Speedwell of Rhu Ship's Log

10 th to 12 th of July 2017 - Ria de Viveiro

Crew : Andy and Helen
Destinations : Ria de Viveiro.
Distance : 36 miles

We left our berth at 0915. It was wet, raining and very grey.

AND 5 MINUTES LATER IT RAINED

After motoring out of the harbour, we sailed close hauled for a short time. However, the wind dropped so it was on with the engine again. We knew we should be able to sail later when we altered our course and we had had plenty of time. As we started the engine motoring we took avoiding action for what looked like a fishing pot buoy. It wasn't, it was a dolphin. With the dolphins there were Shearwaters being chased by Skuas. We were really surprised to see Skuas so far south. There were some that looked like Arctic skuas, which were most probably Pomarine Skuas and there was a Great Skua which, according to our book, don't come this far south. We think the Shearwaters were probably Sooty Shearwaters as they seemed bigger than the ones we have seen before an were very black on the top of their wings. We have also seen plenty of juvenile gannets.

By 1110, we were sailing again, albeit towards Ireland again. (Is someone trying to tell us something?) We tacked twice before managing to get around the headland and into Ria De Viveiro. The swell soon reduced as we got to the head of the Ria towards the town. There was a large space to anchor and it was nice sheltered from the ocean outside. By 1730, we were safe and secure. The rain had stopped and the sun was shining.

We spent a couple of days carrying out chores and reprovisioning. Andy even entered the sea, although only to his waist. We now have a new steering wheel cover, which we must not get dirty. Here are some pictures of the new cover being fitted.

Our tender has now been named Little May after the Mayflower. As mentioned somewhere else on the website, Speedwell was the Mayflower's sister ship. However, she didn't manage to make the journey across the Atlantic as she had too many leaks!
