Speedwell of Rhu Ship's Log

12 th to 13 th of July 2012 - Belfast

Crew : Andy and Helen
Destinations : Belfast.
Distance : 19 miles

Thursday 12 july

We left Glenarm around 1100 to catch the south going tide. Another boat, Misty, left just before us. The winds were quite light so it was perfect weather for the cruising chute. As we past Misty they were clearly inspired and soon had their cruising chute up as well. (there's was actually much nicer than ours). Being a little smaller than us they didn't catch us and in fact carried on with their cruising chute for a while after we had given up due to the winds dropping.

MISTY

We motored the rest of the way into Belfast Lough and up the Victoria Channel into Abercorn Basin right in the centre of Belfast and next to the brand new Titanic Centre. Because of the bank holiday we hadn't been able to call up the harbour to check there was a berth, but when we arrived we found the new pontoon was now much bigger than it had been shown in our pilot book and there was plenty of room

SAMSON AND GOLIATH

Friday 13 th July

Today we spent the morning visiting the Titanic centre and then exploring Belfast. Sadly the National Trust pub called The Crown was closed as was the City Hall. However, Belfast was a very friendly place and we did find another attractive pub for a pint on our way back to the boat. The helicopters were evident following the previous nights problems, but otherwise all was peaceful.

We checked the cinema by the pontoons and found a film just starting about vampires. It was very good and we followed it with a curry next door, so no cooking was required. Later on the skipper of Misty popped on board to swap e-mails and he admitted trying to race us in his 33 foot Moody. We also enjoy racing other yachts, but only those much smaller than us!
