Speedwell of Rhu Ship's Log

16 th of June 2010 - Sea Sick Helen

Crew : Helen and Andy
Destinations : River Orwell.
Distance : 38 miles

We set off at 0430. The marina was calm and there was no sign of the forecast strong winds (yet). We headed down the river and out to sea. The tide was with us so we made good time. As the mouth of the river opened the wind increased to Force 6 with occasional Force 7 gusts. We got the main sail up but as the wind was on our nose we needed to motor. The river Crouch has a very unexciting entrance, but it is relatively shallow, so the waves were breaking, the boat was bouncing and the wind was definitely blowing! As we headed back up past the wind farm the bouncing was pretty hard to take, but as we were speeding along with the tide we decided to keep going. The relief experienced by Helen when entering Harwich Harbour was immense. We found a mooring Buoy opposite Levington at around 1130 and went to bed. In the evening we were entertained by people out racing their yachts and a beautiful sunset.
