Speedwell of Rhu Ship's Log

23 rd of May 2018 - Invading El Ferrol

Crew : Helen and Andy
Destinations : San Filipe.
Distance : 10 miles

We took the tender ashore for coffee and shopping in Ares before weighing anchor and heading out toward El Ferrol. The wind was very light from the west/southwest. The forecast had been for strong winds from the north/north east which was why we had decided just to get up to El Ferrol before heading east the following day. We had a very pleasant, albeit slow sail to our destination. The entrance of the harbour is quite industrial with a large breakwater and a number of cranes and slag heaps. However, the entrance up to El Ferrol is a lovely channel surrounded by woodland finishing with two forts to keep the British out. El Ferrol is a big navy town and shipbuilding area. However, the towns and anchorages were very pretty and protected. We anchored next to the Castillo de San Filipe on the port side of the channel and opposite the Castillo de la Palma on the starboard side.
