Speedwell of Rhu Ship's Log

24 th of June 2012 - Sailing again

Crew : Andy and Helen
Destinations : Loch Aline.
Distance : 36 miles

Sunday 24 th June

We spent the morning preparing Speedwell, sorting out the sails and making our way to the fuel pontoon where we filled her up with diesel. We are hoping this will be enough to last the rest of the summer.

We waited on the breakwater pontoon until 1300 to give us a fair tide through the sound of Luing. We had the sails up straight away as it looked like the wind would be in our favour. Apart from motoring through Dorus Mor with the wind on our nose, we managed to sail the whole way to Loch Aline with a reefed mainsail and 3 reefs in the genoa. We were fairly close to the wind, but Speedwell did us proud, making around 7 knots and managing to skirt up wind of two big rocks with lighthouses on them. As we entered the Sound of Mull other yachts gave up and motored but we continued to sail, putting in two last tacks before heading into the Loch under engine as the wind died.
