Speedwell of Rhu Ship's Log

26 th of July 2010 - Skye

Crew : Helen and Andy
Destinations : Broadford Bay.
Distance : 35 miles

We had a late start, around 1130, in order to catch the tides through The Sound of Sleat, which are very strong due to the volume of water being pushed through a tiny gap between Skye and the mainland. Another boat left a little before us as they were heading toward Plockton and needed to get through the narrows at Kyle Akin at the same time as us. Visibility was poor and the tide was slightly against us for most of the way. We used the radar and enjoyed identifying various boats and headlands. We gradually caught up with the other boat, but as they were motoring we didn't pass them until we got to Kyle Akin. At this point the wind picked up and the tides pushed us through at over 9knots. We got to the Skye Bridge and headed out into the inner sound, hoping to get to an anchorage at the top of Raasay Island. Unfortunately the wind was very strong and we decided to go back to pick up a mooring at the bridge. We were just too late as they had all been taken. We decided to head back out into the wind and found a great, although blowy anchorage in Broadford Bay, Skye.
