Speedwell of Rhu Ship's Log

27 th of August 2016 - Castletown Bearhaven

Crew : Helen and Andy
Destinations : Castletown Bearhaven.
Distance : 33 miles

Today we were up at 6am and off the anchor by 7am. There wasn't much wind so we motored initially. As we got to Cod head the wind picked up and we were able to comfortably sail to Dursey Sound. We were fairly protected from the swell until we passed through the sound under the cable car, as the wind was south easterly. Once we got through Dursey Sound the wind and swell both picked up.

DURSEY SOUND WITH CABLE CAR IN THE DISTANCE

We decided to tack toward Bear Island and take refuge in the harbour there. Andy took the helm and enjoyed steering through the swell. He also spotted a hump back whale broaching in the waves, but I missed it. Once we got to Piper Sound the western entrance of the sound between Bear Island and the mainland, we motored past the fishing harbour and picked up a mooring buoy for the night. We were joined by the Naval ship: L.E. William Butler Yeats, looking grey and menacing. The following morning the sun made all the difference.
