Speedwell of Rhu Ship's Log

30 th of July to 3 rd of August 2012 - Waiting for the weather (again)

Crew : Andy and Helen
Destinations : Milford Marina.
Distance : 7 miles

Monday 30th July to Friday 3 rd August

After breakfast we contacted Milford haven Marina to find out if they had a berth and how the lock worked. We were told there was space and the lock would be ready for us to enter the basin for 11:46, but we could wait in the lock which would be open at the seaward end. The lock can only cope with three openings each tide as it is massive. It was originally built for big ships We sailed up river past the oil refineries. There were several tugs and only one tanker, presumably because it is cheaper to anchor in St Brides Bay.

The river was surprisingly pretty and made all the more interesting by the large number of forts and oil refineries. The lock was massive and took 30 minutes to fill for us.

We found our berth and settled down for chores and to prepare for a crossing to The Isles of Scilly or Cornwall once the weather was suitable. We were able to rid ourselves of a locker full of recycling and fill up again with groceries from Tesco, only a 5 minutes walk from the marina.

We spent the following few days waiting for a weather window and exploring Pembrokeshire on foot and bike. We woke on Thursday morning to find we had a celebrity as our neighbour. Gipsy Moth IV, looking beautiful, despite her age and having an adventurous time, sailing around the world a few times and being ship wrecked on a coral reef.
