Speedwell of Rhu Ship's Log

3 rd to 6 th of April 2019 - Weymouth

Crew : Helen and Andy
Destinations : Weymouth.
Distance : 67 miles

We left the pontoon at first light around 0630 as the sun rose behind the rocks at the harbour entrance.

As we left the harbour we were able to get the sails up and sailed on a beam reach across Lyme Bay without the mainsail, since the decks were still slippery with frost which would have made it difficult to get to the main mast. Slowly the wind died, the deck thawed and we raised the mainsail. By mid afternoon we had to resort to the engine. We rounded Portland Bill quite a long way off shore to avoid the overfalls and strong tide which had just started to turn against us. We entered the harbour and were tied up right opposite the harbour master's office on Custom Quay by 1730.

For the next couple of days it proceeded to pour with rain accompanied by strong easterly winds so we stayed put. On the Saturday Nick and Susan drove over from Poole with Catherine. Susan decided to accept our offer of a berth to Poole the following day and, after a coffee on the sea front in the sun, Nick and Catherine left her in our hands. Nick was looking forward to racing with his sailing club the following day where he could avoid being seasick.
