It was a cold morning but we needed to get going by 0900 to catch the tide to take us 40 miles up river to Seville. It was a sunny day and clear but cold.
The whole area is a haven for birds migrating north and south. We were still slightly early for the large flocks, however we spotted a flock of Glossy Ibis, lots of Grey Heron, Cormorants and Stork. We also passed a large group of small heron, most likely from their appearance and behaviour Black-crowned Night Heron. There were also Red Kite, Marsh Harriers, Buzzards and an Osprey, clearly the latter was on route to somewhere.
Our journey took us 6 hours of motoring but we loved it. We saw one large ship and two small fishing boats for the whole journey. The river was well buoyed, but not charted for the last 20 miles or so, but we had planty of depth the whole way. When we got near to Seville we took the port hand fork in the river up to Gelves. As it was high water we didn't go under the overhead cables but anchored just before them. It was surprisingly rural and quiet given the proximity of a big city. We could see the marina in the distance with a few moored yachts outside.
The next morning, close to low water, we passed under the power cables and tied up on the long pontoon in the river at Gelves marina.
