Speedwell of Rhu Ship's Log

23 rd to 26 th of August 2017 - Lisbon

Crew : Helen and Andy
Destinations : Lisbon.

The Marina Parque Naçoes was about 7 miles up river from the centre of Lisbon, but an easy bus or Metro journey away. It was nice to be in a marina with no swell or creaking of lines and there was very little yacht movement so it was a great place to rest and recuperate. Whilst there we decided to have a another go at visiting a Capitania to pay our 2 euro light fee. We had tried at Porto and again at Nazare, but the offices were either closed or impossible to find. The marina staff didn't seem to know about it or didn't think it would be necessary as we were just passing through. However, liking to stick to the rules and not wanting to risk a 250 euro fine, we really wanted to pay it. Finally, in Lisbon we were shown where the place was we needed to get to on a map. We were advised to get the bus then a train. However, in an independent mood we decided to take the Metro and then a bus. This got us to the wrong side of the railway tracks, so we had a long walk under a subway, over a bridge and across a road in the process of being laid with tarmac. We eventually found the office. It took the woman the best part of 30 minutes to enter our details onto the system. Then Andy had to go to another counter to pay the 2 euros. We are now covered for the next 6 months.

Apart from this we had a few days exploring Lisbon by bus, metro, foot and bike. We finally found some great food (apart from the delicious Pasteis de Nata) at the Cais Sodre market.

Here are a few more photos from our explorations in Lisbon:

On our last day we stayed near to the marina exploring locally on bike and cycling as far as the Vasco de Gama bridge, the longest in Europe. We reprovisioned the boat, once we found the supermarket which took a while. We also invested in a new wok from the nearby Chinese supermarket, which we seasoned using the hob on deck.
