Speedwell of Rhu Ship's Log

27 th to 28 th of August 2017 - Sines

Crew : Andy and Helen
Destinations : Sines.
Distance : 63 miles

As we had a long sail ahead we were out of the marina just before sunrise at 0700. We managed to get a fair tide down river and then along the coast for most of the way. Unfortunately there was very little wind and it was coming from the south/south west. We had a bit of a deadline to get to Sines as we wanted to arrive before dark to check out the anchorage. We sailed a little bit but mainly motorsailed.

In the harbour, there was a bit of swell, but it felt safe and protected. We arrived around 1830 and anchored off the bathing beach toward the fishing harbour to get some protection from continuing southerly winds and swell coming from the west. Overnight we were the only boat anchored. The following day, we went ashore for a bit of an explore. The caste that Vasco de Gama was born was closed, though there was a statue of him up in the town. After a disappointing lunch where I had to return my Cuttlefish to be cooked we returned to the boat where we were joined by several more boats anchoring around us as well as some heading into the small marina.
